Camp Yawgoog Update Photos and Report
Day 1 Monday
Hello Troop 102 Parents:
It's a clear Monday morning and 13 Scouts are well and 3 Leaders are well at Davy Crockett-Sandy Beach. We had pizza for dinner and settled into camp after the Troop took a hike to get reacquainted with Camp Yawgoog. Our Troop picture is at 10:15 and swimming qualifications are at 10:55 - an easy morning for the Scouts? Don't bet on it...lol.
Yours in Scouting,
Ellis Hopkins

Day 2 Tuesday
Hi Troop 102 Parents:
Day 2 is about to start and, of course, it looks like T102 weather is coming. No worries, the Scouts know what to do/where to go for extreme conditions. 10 Scouts made swimmer qualification and 3 are beginners-not bad. Merit badges are underway and our 3 new Scouts have been rifle shooting and visited the archery range already. We have 4 leaders in camp now so we are well supervised. Glenn and Norman visited us last night too. I'll keep you posted as the weather develops.
Best,
Ellis Hopkins

Day 3 Wednesday
Good Morning Troop 102 Parents:
Well, the sky at Camp Yawgoog this morning is bluish/gray, but we have our hopes that the rain is behind us. It was a wet Tuesday, but there were very few Merit Badge class cancellations. The Scouts were moist but the rain didn't dampen our Scout Spirit. We received a First Class Inspection of our campsite (no small feat given the weather) and everyone slept dry last night. Merit Badge work continues and we will have our first Troop campfire tonight. All is wet, I mean well at Sandy Beach- Land of Bananas, Home of the Beaver. Where Jim the Moose tells all his jokes...
Best,
Ellis

Day 5 Friday
Troop 102 Parents:
Everyone's fine in the land of Bananas. Troop 102 continues to set the standard for Scout Spirit and accomplishment. We have a new Life Scout and we're knocking out the merit badges. We participated in an Indian Lore Campfire and the Sandy Beach Scavenger Hunt last night. Two Scouts will attempt the Mile Swim this morning! Can't believe the week went by so fast.

Ellis Hopkins

Day 6 Saturday
Troop 102 Parents:
It's hard to believe that a week has gone by -much too quickly-but the calendar says otherwise. We will be finishing our merit badge work today and preparing to depart camp. We will be very busy today and tomorrow morning, but there will be worship services in the morning before our final lunch at 11:30. Please feel free to see us at the dining hall at that time. Unfortunately, we only have two tables this year so we are unable to have parents sit with their Scout for the traditional cold cut/peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The Dress Parade is at 12:30 on the Tim O'Neil Field at the entrance of the camp and prepositioning your lawn chairs is recommended. You will notice us passing in review because we will be the smartest-looking troop on the parade field!
See you tomorrow/yours in Scouting

Day 7 Sunday (Epilogue)
Good Morning, Troop 102:
During yesterday's lunch at the Sandy Beach Dining Hall, the staff announced Troop 102's accomplishments during last week's 2015 Yawgoog season. Here are the highlights for those who couldn't make it to the dining hall:
-Troop 102 earned 45 merit badges with 16 partial completions (61 total with 13 Scouts in camp for most of the week). First year Scout, Addy Claussen earned 5 himself!
-Two Scouts (Tyler Vanable and Ian Hopkins) earned their Life Scout Rank; Troop 102 now has 4 Scouts one step away from Eagle!
-Two Scouts (Joe Kerkhoff and Ian Hopkins) completed the BSA Mile Swim in less than an hour!
-Two new Scouts (Addison Claussen and Trevor Peters) earned their Bronze CY and three Scouts (Logan Berek, Brenden Machowski, and Ian Hopkins) earned their Silver CY.
-Troop 102 won Second Place in the Camp Sandy Beach Bake-off with the "Chopmist Chocolate Bomb". Too bad the judge panel had a thing for peaches....
The accomplishment for which I am most proud, however, is that Troop 102 was the runner up for the Camp Sandy Beach "Troop of the Week". This is a huge accomplishment for a troop that finished the week with 12 Scouts in Camp and this could only have been done with all of them pulling together during a great week. We received a "First Class" inspection of our campsite everyday and participated in every 'Troop Tournament' and 'Troop Trivia' activity. This took a lot of Scout Spirit.
It was quite a week and I thank you for the honor of leading your Scouts. Enjoy the rest of the summer.

Ellis Hopkins
